Savannah: The Hostess City of the South

Jake had yet another quick work trip, this time to Savannah, Georgia. I love Charleston inside and out and have been dying to get to Savannah to compare. Who doesn’t love Southern Charm? We headed to Savannah in September and stayed 3 nights. Savannah is the perfect city for a long weekend. It is small and you can see most of it by foot.

Day One:

We flew in and got settled into our hotel right away which was awesome. We decided to stay at the Kimpton Brice which is adorable and boutiquey just like we prefer! The description on their website got me right away: “The Kimpton Brice Hotel is like any good Southern belle — beautiful and poised on the outside, a bit sassy and rebellious on the inside”.  This hotel is centrally located: right across the street from the riverwalk and easy walking distance to City Market and Broughton Street. Andddddd they have a daily wine happy hour in the lobby. WIN!

After checking in, we were starving so we headed out for our first meal and stumbled upon Flying Monk Noodle Bar which was packed! When a place is busy in the middle of the week you know it’s going to be good! For a starter try the belly braised pork: spiced palm sugar braise, pickled carrots, cucumbers, cilantro, fried garlic, steamed buns. Be sure to order thai iced tea as a refresher! Then for the entree we chose Duck Noodle Soup and Master Shifu Noodles (slow braised short ribs, wide rice noodles, soy bean sauce, seasonal veggies, egg, cilantro, onions).

We headed out with Finn in the stroller and just decided to mozy around and head toward Forsyth Park which was wonderful! The historic fountain is very memorable (especially when your toddler is trying to scale the protective fence to get a taste of water). As soon as we saw a playground though it was over… 9 slides, 16 climbers, and 8 swings. We let Finn run around until he tired himself out and we headed out – him strapped in the stroller and our fingers crossed that he would nap and we could grab a drink! I mean when you are in a city where you can walk around with a drink you need to take advantage at all times. Duh!

So heading back to the hotel, we stopped at Tandem which was perfect! Tandem Coffee and Spirits, if this isn’t a parents paradise I don’t know what is! What mom doesn’t need a shot of espresso followed by an aperol spritz to go? When you stand outside of the bar and look down a grate, you will see two skeletons dressed in bride and groom attire. It is said that East Bay Inn, which is the hotel attached to this bar, is haunted, and old Charlie comes out to play every now and then.

While Finn napped, Jake and I lounged by the hotel pool with cocktails and read our books. Be aware of the “love bugs” in Savannah they are everywhere and do not like to leave you alone.

For dinner we went to Husk. We love Husk in Charleston so it was only fair we gave it a chance in Savannah. We were blown away. By far the best Husk meal we have ever had!! We just ordered a bunch of different plates and shared everything. Check out this menu!

-NC Scallop Crudo, Watermelon, Black Shallot, Lemon Drop Peppers

-Octopus, Potato, Lemon Balm, GA Olive Oil, Pepper Mash

-Pimiento Cheese, Anson Mills Benne Wafers, Crudité

-Grassroots Pork, Fairy Tale Eggplant, Farro, Purple Ribbon Cane Syrup, Burnt Garlic

Even  though I wanted dessert at Husk, we opted out and headed towards Leopold’s Ice Cream. And yes… it was worth the wait in line! I think we waited about 30 minutes. When you go definitely try the honey almond & cream (made using Savannah Bee Company honey) and also the Rum bisque (using in-house baked almond macaroons).

Day Two:
This morning we headed to brunch at Collins Quarter. We sat outside and Finn was able to be distracted by passers by and a dog with its owner at the next table. Be sure to try: CQ Biscuits- buttermilk biscuits, apple  raisin chicken sausage, poached eggs, bacon gravy, shaved fennel & apple slaw. Short rib hash- braised short rib, potato hash, caramelized onions, chimichurri slaw, roasted red pepper/tomato puree, fried egg. Thai iced coffee and of course classic champagne cocktail aka mimosas! It is brunch after all.

After brunch we just walked around and explored as many of the 22 squares as we could. While walking around we stumbled upon the most adorable little book store called E. Shaver Booksellers. They had the cutest little kids cubby for Finn to sit and look at books. Little nooks are all throughout the store, and we even found a cat sitting on top of some books! Super cute. Finn decided he was tired and decided to throw a little temper tantrum, may or may not have scared the cats, and we left. He fell asleep and we went back to the hotel. With Finn under an umbrella next to the pool, Jake and I got drinks from the hotel bar, went swimming, and got some reading in. Nap time is the best time right? Haha. Once again though the damn love bugs attacked and I had to cover Finn with a light blanket so they didn’t just sit on his sleeping body and mate. Did you know that love bugs only live for 3-4 days and they mate for 2-3 days of their life? (Watch out in May and September, that’s all I am saying).

Once Finn woke up and we swam for a bit more we headed to a late lunch at Treylor Park

Our favorite thing from here was  the “popcorn shrimp” which is lightly fried shrimp on actual popcorn with chive buttermilk ranch and chili powder. So innovative! I also ordered their sloppy joe! I mean when is the last time you had a sloppy joe? They have a cool shot menu where you order a beer and a shot which includes pecan bourbon, pickle back (my personal fav), grape kool aid vodka and tang rum. If Tang doesn’t bring back memories… Super fun spot!

Next up was an impromptu run through the Ellis Square fountains right outside of City Market.

Drinks in hand, we sat down on the stairs and watched Finn run back and forth, soaked from head to toe. It was so warm out that he dried up real quick and then we took a stroll through City Market. Bistros, galleries, local musicians, City Market proved itself to be worth the hype. We headed into the Georgia Tasting room. We both decided on the wine tasting which is all local wines. While tasting, we alternated chasing our little 2 year old around the courtyard outside until we made our way through the tasting. I got a large cup of wine to go and Jake ordered a beer. He sat his beer down because he had to go chase Finn and literally less than 1 minute after coming back his beer was gone! It was hilarious, I guess someone was craving a local craft Georgian beer!

The Paris Market was next on the must list! And please please make sure you go here, it’s absolutely adorable! Southern Living said “Like Alice falling down the rabbit hole, prepare to get lost in a wonderland of the most incredible goods.”  This could not describe this store any better! There is the most charming little corner of the store just for children, with a great book selection and they carry the adorable Maileg line of the little mice in matchstick boxes. Downstairs is the home goods section, where I bought this amazing candle; the scent was “Illuminate”: a prelude to the next adventure (bergamot, jasmine, rose, amber, patchouli). Before you leave the store be sure to grab some french macaroons from the little cafe!

Last stop was the River Walk where we stopped in River Street Sweets and Savannah Bee Company. River Street Sweets is family-owned and the leading supplier of pralines in the world! And Savannah Bee Company was the perfect end to our evening with a mead and honey bar. Finn was kept content in the kids corner coloring at a table while we tasted all different flavors of honey like black sage, orange blossom, lavender and rosemary. My fav was the orange blossom! Towards the end of the river walk though love bugs decided to launch an all-out assault. It was absolutely insane, people were running and swatting and I literally thought they were going to try to mate with me… Beware!

Day Three:
Jake had to work on day three so Finn and I were left to our own accord until the afternoon. We talked about it and decided to have breakfast at our hotel at Pacci. We shared the Pancetta Hash- farm eggs, brunoise potatoes, corn, duck prosciutto, lonza, bell pepper. We then made our way out towards the Georgia State Railroad museum and Savannah children’s museum. I am notorious for getting lost, map or not, so we circled the damn museum twice before I realized we were there. If you have kids and go to Savannah I highly recommend you check this place out! It was so cool!! I mean honestly if I didn’t have Finn I would still want to come to this children’s museum. It’s so pretty!!! I would not recommend a stroller, it was a pain and I parked it next to a bench the entire time and crossed my fingers it would still be there when we were done.

After forcing Finn away from the trains we walked to lunch at Soho South cafe. Two glasses of rose and fried green tomatoes got us ready for nap time at the hotel! After nap we hung out at the hotel’s cute courtyard for happy hour where Jake met us early!

Rooftop bars were on my radar so we checked out Peregrin, the rooftop bar atop Perry Lane Hotel. Be sure to order the Froze All Day- aperol, lillet rose, still rose and lemon. Def a cool place with a kid if you can get a good seat; astroturf, amazing views and cornhole to keep the kiddos busy while you sip froze. It’s divine. Also be sure to check out The Lost Square rooftop bar at Alida Hotel. Just walking through the Alida Hotel lobby I definitely want to stay at this hotel next time we are in Savannah. This rooftop bar would be the coziest place on a cooler evening with the gorgeous wood fireplace.

The finale…eat at The Grey for dinner. A restored 1938 Greyhound bus terminal, you feel transported back in time when you walk into this restaurant. I have never gotten that vibe anywhere except here! It’s amazing! And the hospitality is untouched. The food was amazing, the atmosphere even better. I will go here time and time again when visiting Savannah, without a doubt. The menu is constantly changing but when you go, definitely order quail if it is on the menu!

We had so many things on our list that we couldn’t possibly fit into this trip sooo…..What do we want to do on our next trip?
